Bride of the Wolfman

Another of Universal's tragically lost films, Bride of the Wolfman was actually in post production when the looming specter of World War Two caused Universal to delay (permanently, as it turned out) its release. That's really too bad, because it had some excellent actors in it and would have been a solid addition to the Universal Monsters franchise. Although only one copy of the film is known to exist, the following synopsis is available:

When his son Larry Talbot is transformed into a werewolf, Sir John (Claude Rains) is forced to kill his only heir (as seen in The Wolfman). Sick with grief over the loss, he becomes a recluse in his own home - unaware that the minor wounds he suffered in the battle with his son have now left the taint of lycanthropy in his own veins. (Indeed, because he was not seriously injured, the disease has a long onset time - during which Sir John becomes more and more reclusive and grief stricken.)

Elsewhere, a gypsy woman named Nadya (Gloria Holden) learns from her mother, Maleva (Maria Ouspenskaya), that Larry Talbot was responsible for the death of her brother, Bela (again, as seen in The Wolfman). Before her mother can stop her or tell her of Larry Talbot's death, Nadya leaps upon a horse and rides to Talbot Manor for revenge.

When Nadya arrives at the castle and meets Sir John, she soon comes to see him as a kindred spirit. Both have lost someone close to them and both know the horrors of the full moon. Indeed, it is not long before the two fall in love.

Sadly, the disease in Sir John's veins has now reached maturity. When the full moon rises at the end of the month, he becomes a werewolf and stalks the countryside - killing a game keeper (Warren Williams) and his wife (Martha O'Driscoll).

The villagers recognize the mark of the wolf and the local constable, Wardwick (Lionel Atwill) tracks the beast the grounds of Talbot Manor. Along the way he encounters Maleva, who has followed her daughter. He stops her and demands to know what business a Gypsy has in this area. When she claims to know Sir John, he takes her along to meet him and discover if this is true.

With the dim realization of what he has done burning in his mind, Sir John tries to drive Nadya away - but she refuses to go. As they argue, the sun sets and the moon again stirs the supernatural horror within him. Screaming, Nadya flees and Sir John pursues. At that moment, Wardwick and Maleva arrive at the Manor. Hearing the screams within, they force the door and rush to Nadya's aid. In the battle that follows, Sir John topples from a balcony onto a silver candle stand. Dying, he transforms back into his human form as Nadya weeps over his body.
